ASME Turbo Expo 2010, Glasgow 14-18 2010
Cardwell, Chana and Gilboy (Qinetiq) present a paper entitled THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF A GAS TURBINE ENGINE FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE (FOD) DETECTION SYSTEM discussing the performance of Monitran Technology's new FOD Detection System

The complexity of gas turbines makes maintenance something of a black art. Currently optical tip timing systems are the industry standard but they are expensive as well as being easily contaminated by oil, dust, exhaust gases and even water. Recently Monitran and QinetiQ have developed revolutionary new eddy current technology, and data from Rolls-Royce shows it to be as good as optical technology but with no contamination problems. Kam Chana (QinetiQ) and Donald Lyon (Monitran) present the research.
